There are several horror RPG games that I’ve personally played. Most have glorious stories and designs. But there are few dark RPG games that I really love and visit their world from time to time. So, today I’m going to list down the best RPG Horror games that you must play.

Most of these RPG horror games are well respected in the gaming industry and gained many positive critics. Today the horror genre has been growing rapidly & many developers are onboard developing it. However, Silent Hill PT which was not a full game but has positively left its impact.

So today, we are going to look at the list of Horror RPG Games that you must play –

Best RPG Horror Games

After a lot of analysis, I came up with the absolute beast of horror RPG games. I hope this helps you build the fear that you are looking for –

1. Bloodborne

bloodborne

Bloodborne is one of the best RPG game that was released on PS4. We consider this game at the top of our horror RPG game because it is so gritty and dark. Not only that, but all those who ever played bloodborne have spent countless hours defeating the game.

Bloodborne is developed by FromSoftware, the same studio behind Dark Soul Series & Demon’s Soul. Their previous game has inspired a lot, and they have delivered a fabulous hard-hitting game. Bloodborne will be recognized for decades to come.

The game has lots of uneasy looking monsters, and the dark environment fascinatingly feels more alive. The game is a semi-open world, just like dark souls. With many more horror stories that can be found in the environment, this makes the perfect game to play.

Every game horror RPG game would be incomplete without the sound design. Bloodborne has awesome OST that I usually listen to, & also better effects while fighting scary monsters.

The game has achieved to please many critics ranking 92 on Metacritic.

The game is PlayStation exclusive & is free on PS5 as part of the PlayStation Plus Collection.

2. Residental Evil 2: Remake

Resident-Evil-2-Remake

Oh boy! It’s been 20 years since the original Residental Evil 2; Capcom has remade its classic from 1998. 20 years is a long time, yet Capcom has stuck Residental Evil as the best horror game of 2019. It scores 91 on Metacritic and has got more favorable reviews from the players.

Residental Evil 2 Remake has been made from the ground up and has improved mechanics. With all the graphical enhancements, the game looks gorgeous. The game is a survival horror game, and it gets many scary elements throughout the play.

The surprising and gory elements make this our #2 best horror role-playing game.

The main characters are very much likable, but the side characters give more life to the story. If you are looking for a zombie apocalypse game, this one is for you.

3. Call of Cthulhu

call-of-cthulhu

When it comes to horror storytelling, Call of Cthulhu will be my favorite. You will be playing as Edward Pierce in this cosmic horror role-playing game. Edward Pierce is a detective working on the case of Hawkins Family Murder, which uncovers many secrets.

You’ll be roaming around Hawkins mansion looking for clues and answers. Meanwhile, you will also be upgrading your skill tree. Every decision you take would be affecting your answers and gameplay. I like the fact of how you take the help of the environment to uncover secrets and clues. You will be able to read books and inspect certain elements in the mansion.

All in all, you will enjoy playing Call of Cthulhu over its period of 10 hours. The game is available for playing on Playstation, Xbox, PC & Nintendo Switch.

4. The Last of Us Remastered

the last of us

The Last of Us Remastered has always struck me as one of the best games ever made. Naughty Dog has done exceptionally well in hitting the storyline. The game originally was released on PS3 in 2013 & remastered for PS4 came in 2014.

The game takes place in a zombie apocalypse world where you will play as Joel and carry Ellie, immune. You don’t call the infected zombies but runners, clickers, stalkers, bloaters, etc. There are several boss fights in the midst.

It might be one of those games which have a masterpiece of the storyline with horror elements.

In 2020 The Last of Us Part II was released as a sequel and had mixed reactions. HBO has also been working on live-action series based on Last Us.

At times it’s scary, and heart pumping as you will be playing stealthy missions.

5. Vampyr

VAMPYR

Vampyr is a highly under-rated role-playing game. It was also free for PS Plus subscribers earlier.

This horror RPG occurs in London during World War I & the city is suffering from the disease. The music fills the emptiness around and hits well during the combat. The character design is truly awesome & with their excellent written dialogue interaction, the story feels much alive.

You will involve in various combats, and you will observe Vampyr plays out just like The Witcher 3 but in a horror genre.

The story starts rather slow as vampire lore but grows in time. As a vampire, you get to feed on people, but you decide when to who to. That was unique when you decide to feast on someone only after their blood is improved.

You will meet new people who will give you a quest; you can either take the quest or feed on them, lose the chance of the quest, and create more problems.

6. Blair Witch

blair witch game

Blair Witch is based on a movie named The Blair Witch Project, released in 1999. This single film was made into a franchise over the course of a decade & today;, there are 5 films. But, apart from the movie, Blair Witch Game is an excellent horror role-playing game.

You will play as a police officer named Ellis and will be accompanied by a german shepherd. A boy has gone missing in the black hill forest, and you go through finding him. What you come across is the curse of the witch, and your worst fears will haunt you.

There are numerous instances where you will find references to the movies. This RPG is psychological and played in a first-person perspective. Its excellent sound design and not so frequent jump scares will make you play the game for numerous hours.

With great storylines and good myths/mysterious that you come across really makes the game to be played if you love horror storytelling.

The game is available on Xbox & PC.

7. Evil Within 2

Evil Within 2

Evil Within 2 is gruesome and bloody with occasionally giving you harder missions to complete. Just like every other horror RPG, you will play as a detective named Sebastian Castellanos. Your aim is to save your daughter to which you go through a wicked world.

The world is filled with twists & turns with frequent nightmares that you have to tackle. The game is a third-person horror RPG that has been developed by Tango Gameworks & published by Bethesda.

Evil Within 2 is a sequel to its 2014 game of the same name. This horror game has been widely recognized and praised for its storytelling and world design.

You can play this game on Xbox, Playstation & PC.

8. Outlast II

outlast 2

Outlast II, released in 2019, was one of the best horror games that I had played. It borrows some of its elements from Outlast: Whistleblower, released in 2017. The game has received fair and good critics, and I highly recommend you try this one.

The game has been developed by the Red Barrels who developed the previous two of the Outlast Games. The game has been developed on Unreal Engine making it a somewhat good-looking game.

The game is held in a small open world I mean a smart open world. It actually captures its environment exceptionally well and the storyline makes the perfect use.

You play as a character named Blake Langermann who by profession is a cameraman. Also, companied by his wife to uncover the mysterious abandoned village. You will come across various quests and answers. The game starts with the mysterious murder of a pregnant woman named Jane Doe. While investigating it leads them to something larger.

Outlast II has some of the best graphics you can see and the night elements make it even scarier. You can play this game on Playstation 4, PC. Xbox & even on Nintendo Switch.

9. The Sinking city

the sinking city

The Sinking City is a cinematic looking role-playing game. If you are familiar with love craft country then you will be mesmerized.

You will play as a private investigator uncovering the truth. You will find the answer to why the town of Oakmont has been hit with bad floods and caused unusual inhabitants.

The map is open-world has will give a better storytelling experience. Most of the time you will travel by the help of a boat. Talking about the character design it’s okay at points, few of the times it looks like the newer characters also look the same.

But what stands aside are its camera angles and dialogues. The dialogues are meaningful and storytelling. If you loved Call of Cthulhu then you definitely have to check out The Sinking City.

The game has been developed by Frogwares which is based on Unreal Engine 4. Is available to play on Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox & Playstation.

10. Darkest Dungeons

darkest dungeons

Darkest Dungeons maybe not the type of horror role-playing game you would be looking for, but listing this gives me immense pleasure. For those who have not played Darkest Dungeons, it is more psychological rather than horror.

The game was released in 2016 and secured one of the respected games to be released on PC. Compared to other games, Darkest Dungeons never feels repetitive; instead, it brings a lot to the towards.

The game is made and built differently; it can be somewhat similar to borderlands but is far more straightforward. You and your fellow teammates happen to be going through different dungeons and come across monsters. Which you can either fight or retreat. But every decision you make affects your story.

You go through experiences like you getting your teammates killed.

But all in all, the Darkest Dungeons has some of the best ways of storytelling. The sound play is awesome, and dialogues sometimes bring more toppings on the top.

Conclusion

Horror RPGs are one of the most trending genres today. Silent Hill games have always been at the top of the list and many game developers admired its storytelling.

Today as the technology and graphics improve we get more and more graphically intense games.

Bloodborne will remain my favorite horror RPG of all time. Until and unless they release Blood Borne 2 which is better than the original.

The only game to look forward to for horror role-playing game is Residental Evil Village.
